How LASIK Works
LASIK (laser in-situ keratomileusis) reshapes the surface of the eye to correct refractive errors such as myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness) and astigmatism. It is a bladeless, usually painless procedure which takes about about 20 minutes to perform for both eyes. Recovery is quick, with most people seeing 20/20 or better within 8 hours of the procedure.
A Femtosecond laser creates a flap on the surface of the cornea to expose the underlying stroma for treatment. A precise computer-guided Excimer Laser is then used to recontour the cornea to correct the refractive error.
